Choose a cabinet finish that works with your room, material and daily use. ATX Custom Cabinets provides painted and stained or natural wood finishes as part of custom cabinetry in Austin and Central Texas. Approved repainting or refinishing starts with a review of the existing cabinets and coating.

Painted or Natural Wood?

Paint-grade cabinetry gives a consistent color while keeping the focus on door style and proportions. Natural or stained wood shows grain and color variation. White oak has a pronounced grain; walnut brings deeper natural tones. Species, veneer selection, grain direction, stain and sheen all influence the finished appearance.

Review a physical sample in the room lighting before approval. Screens and inspiration photographs cannot establish an exact color match. Wood varies between boards, and an older finish can change with light and use. The approved sample and written scope define the intended result.

Name-Brand Finish Options for Your Budget

We can review the following product families for the approved cabinet scope. Value, midrange and premium are planning levels, not fixed prices: preparation, existing coating removal, wood species, color, number of coats and project conditions affect the total. We confirm the exact product and availability before ordering.

Value-Focused Paint and Stain

BEHR PREMIUM Cabinet, Door & Trim enamel is a cabinet-paint option to compare for straightforward colors and scopes. Minwax and Varathane wood stains offer familiar stain choices for suitable bare wood, paired with a compatible protective topcoat. Stain is selected for the wood and desired appearance; it is not a substitute for proper preparation or a required clear coat.

Midrange Cabinet Paint and Clear Finishes

Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and Benjamin Moore ADVANCE are cabinet and trim paint options. For visible grain, compare General Finishes Water Based Wood Stain with a compatible clear finish, such as High Performance Water Based Topcoat. General Finishes Arm-R-Seal is an oil-based urethane option for a warmer clear appearance; it is not a pure oil finish.

Premium and Specialty Wood Finishes

General Finishes Enduro Clear Poly provides a professional spray-applied clear-finish option when the project and equipment are suitable. For an oil-finished wood appearance, compare Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C and Osmo Polyx-Oil. These oil systems have their own preparation, application, curing and maintenance requirements. We approve a sample on the selected wood before committing to the full project.

Application Matched to the Product

We select coatings around the approved handheld, HVLP or airless spray setup and the job conditions. A pressure setting alone does not establish compatibility: the coating, sprayer model, tip or needle, material viscosity and manufacturer instructions must agree. We do not promise that every product can run through every handheld sprayer.

BEHR’s cabinet enamel lists airless application. Emerald Urethane and ADVANCE have manufacturer guidance for airless and HVLP use. General Finishes offers spray guidance for its applicable water-based products. Wiping stains and oils are hand-applied and excess is removed where their instructions require it; Rubio Oil Plus 2C, standard Osmo Polyx-Oil and wipe-on Arm-R-Seal are not presented here as interchangeable spray paints.

Sourcing and Selection

We can compare locally obtainable retail coatings and supplier options, including General Finishes through Dakota Hardwoods. Special-order colors, sizes and professional products are confirmed with the supplier. The final proposal names the coating system and approved sample; it does not assume every listed brand is held in stock.

Our Standard Finishing Sequence

We fabricate the cabinetry, complete shop sanding and preparation, then deliver, install and fully field-fit it. Cabinet joining, scribes, fillers, panels, toe kicks, moldings and adjustments are completed before final finishing.

Next we protect and contain the work area, complete final preparation, and apply the approved paint, stain or clear finish. After the required cure, we complete hardware installation and reassembly, final adjustment, touch-ups and cleanup.

This intentional workflow applies to new construction, occupied homes and furnished homes. Masking, floor and travel-path protection, containment, dust control, ventilation and cleanup are planned for the space. Prefinishing is an exception when project conditions genuinely require or justify it. See our full cabinet process.

Repainting, Refinishing or Refacing?

Repainting changes the coating on retained components. Refinishing renews or changes a finish and may require removal of the old coating. Both depend on substrate condition, adhesion and finish compatibility. They do not repair failing cabinet boxes or change an unsuitable layout.

Refacing changes doors and drawer fronts while retaining suitable boxes; approved exposed frames and panels may need finishing to coordinate. Replacement is worth considering when the boxes, layout or storage needs require more extensive changes.

Plan the Finish Before Fabrication

The proposal should identify components to be finished, preparation, sample approval, sheen, protection, access, cure requirements and reassembly. Cabinetry is our core work; this service is not whole-house painting.
